U.S. CONGRESS —U.S. Senator Steve Daines and U.S. Representative Ryan Zinke today released the following statement on the U.S. Air Force’s (USAF) draft request for proposal (RFP) for the UH-1N Replacement Program.
The USAF intends to conduct a full and open competition to procure up to 84 replacement helicopters.
“It’s welcome news to see forward movement in replacing the Vietnam-era helicopters to enhance the security of our nuclear weapons,” Daines stated. “These aircraft are a much needed tool in protecting our ICBMs and I will continue pressing the Air Force to complete this process as expeditiously as possible.”
“After years of delays, I’m thrilled to see the Air Force take this critical step to secure our nuclear missile fields,”Zinke stated. “As a member of the Armed Services committee, I’ve made it my top priority to replace these aging aircraft in a timely and efficient manner. This RFP is a step in the right direction and I will remain dedicated to getting this project across the finish line.”
The replacement helicopter must be able to carry at least 9 combat loaded troops with the necessary equipment, sustain a speed of at least 135 knots, and fly for a minimum distance of 225 nautical miles and at least 3 hours unrefueled. Additionally, the replacement aircraft will be both armored and armed to mitigate anticipated threats. The contract awardee will present the USAF with a sustainment plan and provide all necessary training devices and courseware to support the new platform.
