Daines Honors Billings Couple as “Angels in Adoption”

U.S. SENATE — Senator Steve Daines last week recognized Susan and Jack Klein of Billings as his “Angels in Adoption” – an honor designated to Americans making a difference in the lives of children through adoption.

“It’s an honor to nominate Susan and Jack Klein as our ‘Angels in Adoption.’ As a Retired Lieutenant Colonel, Jack has continued the practice of serving both his country and community,” stated Daines “Today, Jack and Susan make a profound impact not only on the lives of the children they have adopted, but on the greater community of Billings.”

“Senator Daines, thank you for this. And we know that there just are thousands of families out there that are adopting kids and we don’t tend to think of ourselves necessarily as special, but it’s a great honor  and we hope that we can encourage some other people as well”, Jack Klein stated

With four children at the time, Jack and Susan thought their family was complete but after hearing information about several children in need of adoptive families at church, Susan and Jack Klein were intrigued. They began their adoptive paper work in 2004 and nine months later they traveled to China to pick up their son, Andrew. At the age of five weeks, Andrew had his right arm amputated above the elbow. He is now 13 and faces the challenges of life with only one arm with courage and perseverance surrounded by support from his family. For example, he enjoys playing Xbox and uses his one arm and his feet.

In 2005, with Andrew at age three, Jack and Susan began work on a second adoption. Due to the military relocating the family in the middle of the paperwork, the second adoption was processed three years later. Around Thanksgiving of 2008, the Kleins travelled to Vietnam to adopt their daughter Grace. With Grace at age four, she and her brother Andrew instantly hit it off.

Angels in Adoption is a program through the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute and honors individuals, couples and organizations that have made extraordinary contributions on behalf of children in need of families.
