Readout of U.S. Senator Steve Daines’ Meeting with Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev

U.S. Senator Steve Daines, Chairman of the European Subcommittee for the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, met today with Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev in Baku, Azerbaijan. Senator Daines discussed regional security concerns, including the Trump Administration’s desire to achieve a lasting peace in the region. He echoed Secretary Rubio’s most recent statements that there would be tremendous benefits from Azerbaijan and Armenia signing a peace agreement.

Senator Daines also conveyed his support for Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan working together to strengthen energy security in the region by allowing energy to be transferred across the Caspian Sea, which would lessen the dependence of other nations on Russian oil.
