A great attitude, your camera phone, and clothes to stay warm and comfortable!
Although it’s nothing like Montana, January is historically cold and wet in Washington, DC. Dress accordingly and in comfortable shoes. You will likely be walking several miles in grass, cobblestone, gravel, and paved surfaces. The President won’t mind if you’re in warm boots and jacket. Once you’re inside the perimeter, you will not be able to return to your car or hotel to put on more layers.
Leave bags, chairs and other items at home. Prohibited items include but are not limited to: firearms and ammo, explosives, knives/blades/sharp objects, mace/pepper spray, sticks/poles, pocket/hand tools/Leatherman, packages, backpacks, large bags, duffel bags, suitcases, thermoses, coolers, strollers, umbrellas, laser pointers, signs/posters, alcohol, and animals. Food items are also typically not allowed either.
You will not be able to come and go once you enter the security perimeter.
