U.S. SENATE – U.S. Senator Steve Daines today delivered the following remarks at a Senate Republican press conference slamming President Biden and Senate Democrats for their refusal to negotiate with Speaker McCarthy to increase the debt ceiling. In addition to increasing the debt ceiling through March 31, 2024, the House-passed bill includes provisions that would place responsible limits on federal spending, reclaim unspent COVID funds and increase domestic energy production through permitting reform.

“I’m struck by the fact that as we talk about the debt ceiling, the Democrats don’t want to talk at all about debt. It’s one of the two words that’s being talked about every moment right now across the country – the debt ceiling.

“There is one party in Washington, D.C., that is standing between the American people and default on the debt, and that is President Biden and the Senate Democrats.

“There’s one thing standing between responsible spending reforms and the American people, and that’s President Biden and the Senate Democrats.

“There is one thing standing between increasing energy production with responsible permitting reforms and the American people, and that is President Biden and the Senate Democrats.

“We are united as Republicans in governing responsibly. It is time for President Biden, after 90 days of silence on this ticking time bomb, to finally engage.

“He needs to come to the table with serious reforms, get on board and negotiate a deal here to avoid this crisis. Not doing so is the height of irresponsibility.”
