Science shows unborn children feel pain at 20 weeks
U.S. SENATE —U.S. Senator Steve Daines made the following statement after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell met Daines’ request to bring the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which prohibits abortion after 20 weeks – the point at which scientific evidence shows that unborn children can feel pain – to the Senate floor for a vote.
The bill failed to reach the 60-vote threshold mandated under Senate rules.
Prior to the vote, Daines spoke on the Senate floor, calling on his colleagues to join him in fighting for the unborn.

“Do a google search for ‘20 weeks’ and take a look at the pictures that come up under google images,” said Daines. “How can we say, that’s not a baby?”
The United States is currently one of only seven countries in the world that permit elective abortion after 20 weeks. Polling numbers show the majority of Americans support a ban on abortion at this stage of pregnancy.

On January 19, 2018, Daines and Senate colleagues sent Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a letter calling for a vote on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
On January 18, 2018, Daines joined colleagues on the Senate floor, urging the swift passage of the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
Last Congress, Daines helped introduce the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
In the House, Daines was a cosponsor of the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and actively urged for Senate passage in the 113th Congress.
