Daines Encourages Commission to Follow MT’s Constitution and Historical Precedent, Reject Gerrymandering in MT’s New Congressional District Map

U.S. SENATE — U.S. Senator Steve Daines issued the following statement ahead of today’s public comment period for the proposed maps for Montana’s new U.S. House of Representatives seats.

“As Montana’s Districting and Apportionment Commission prepares to draw the final map of Montana’s new Congressional districts, I strongly urge them to look at historical precedent and draw a map that makes sense for all Montanans. It would be ludicrous to have a western district that excludes Montana’s four westernmost counties. It’s important that any map is not only free of political gerrymandering, but also follows Montana’s constitution,” Daines said.

Background:

Daines issued a statement slamming Democratic Commissioners for drawing districts that blatantly benefit one party after the proposed maps for Montana’s new U.S. House of Representatives seats were released.

Pat Williams (D), the last living representative to serve in a two-district Montana, stated that the line should be drawn north to south, recognizing the political preferences of the eastern and western regions of the state.

Daines issued a statement when it was announced that Montana would regain a seat in the United States House of Representatives.

Montana lost its second seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in the 1990 census.
